How to Take Your Phytoplankton
By Dr. Lana Kontos, Chief Wellness Officer, Global Phytoplankton Alliance
Hi GPA Family,
It’s Dr. Lana Kontos here, your Chief Wellness Officer. This week, I want to talk about something that might seem simple, but it's actually really important: how to take your phytoplankton. More specifically, how to take it in a way that works for you and doesn’t make your taste buds revolt.
Let’s be real: this isn’t dessert. It’s not chocolate ganache. It’s not even close. Phytoplankton is a powerful, nutrient-dense marine plant and yes, it tastes like something that came from the ocean. Think sushi. And a lot of people just aren’t into that flavor.
But that’s OK. Because the goal isn’t to sip and savor it - the goal is to get it in your body - every single day.
Rule #1: Keep It Cold
Never - never - put your phytoplankton in anything hot. No tea, no coffee, no hot soup, no warm smoothies. Heat can destroy the delicate plant nutrients that make phytoplankton so powerful.
Always mix it with something cold. That’s how you keep all 90 billion plant cells alive and active.
Quick & Easy: The GPA Way
Most of us at GPA are busy people. The simplest method? Take a scoop, mix it in a couple of ounces of cold, filtered water, and shoot it like a wellness shot. Done.
Don’t dilute it in a big glass - smaller is better. That way, you can take it quickly and get the nutrients into your system fast.
If you’re wondering when to take it:
-
Best option: 10 minutes before a meal, especially breakfast or lunch
-
But really: Any time is fine—before, after, or with food. Just don’t overthink it.
Other Ways to Take It (Especially If You’re Not a Fan of the Taste)
-
Cold Iced Tea or Iced Coffee
Mix your scoop in a couple of ounces and take it like a shot. -
Coconut Water
A popular choice - especially the flavored ones (blueberry, raspberry, pineapple). Just keep it low in sugar. -
Plant-Based Milk
Almond milk, oat milk, etc., work well in small amounts. Avoid dairy - it clumps. -
For Kids or Sensitive Taste Buds
Mix into a spoonful of applesauce, plant-based yogurt, or pudding.
What to Avoid
-
Anything hot
-
Dairy milk
-
Carbonated drinks
-
Mixing into large amounts of liquid
The takeaway? Never miss a day.
This isn’t about flavor - it’s about fuel. One scoop of phytoplankton a day delivers nature’s most complete nutrition directly into your cells.
Find the method that works for you, stick to it, and enjoy the benefits.
To your health,
Dr. Lana Kontos
